I heard E34 V8s are riskier than E39 V8s

thats probably due to the nikasil fiasco which A most if not all cars have been fixed by now and B as long as you don't run low octane gas you will be fine.

I would love to own a E34 540i M sport or M5, the E34 is the best mix of 80's vintage styling and 90's modernness. Obviously the E39 is a better sorted car but I don't care.

It just looks amazing... if only I could convince my parents to sell my Lexus and buy this....

Good to know, thanks!
The first 540i always held a special place in my heart. I remember being in high school and wishing my E30 318i was a 540i

Negotiate a $500 discount for selling a car without wheels, and then it's NP all day. I missed out on one of these (6spd E34 540i) for $4500 a month or two ago and have been kicking myself ever since. If this wasn't on the opposite end of the country from me I'd be test-driving it this afternoon.

false.... the M60B40 in the E34 is quite reliable and durable... When they were new, BMW had to warranty a bunch of them because the cylinder liner material (Nikasil) didn't play nice with our high-Sulfur gasoline and would degrade and cause total engine failure.....
BMW warrantied these motors with new M60B40 ones with Alusil liners. The Nikasil ones which weren't warrantied lived on and if they are still running these days, they won't suffer any problems and won't be any concern...
The M62B44 in the 96-98 540 E39 is just as reliable as the M60B40, with BMW doing Alusil from the very start of that engine. However, BMW updated the M62 to the M62tuB44 for 99-03 models (tu in BMW engine codes means technical update), adding VANOS... The VANOS engines have serious timing chain guide problems and they're basically a service item every 150k miles I would say.
In the rest of the world, with non-sulfur fuel, BMW phased out Nikasil in 1998 for the same Alusil they started using in the USA exclusively for 1996 model year.
I hope that helped :)
Oh yeah.. that E34 is DEFINITELY a NP. It will gain tons of value. It's the most valuable non-M E34

Wow great info, thanks!
That did help, in a bad way. Now I want one. But if I buy any more bimmers I think I might end up in the nuthouse :P

CP, identified problems not sorted, 'bring your own wheels' (WTF?!)... E39 540i M Sports run 5-6k all day long.

True but the only good condition E39 540i Ms are around $8000 and up. If you can find a good one on the east coast please tell me since I need one now.

Or you could buy this one for $3200. Local to me. http://slo.craigslist.org/cto/4489858013…
High miles & not as clean, but definite NP.

I love a well kept e34, especially if it's a stick with 18" BBS's.
